Is Mitt Legit?
You could probably read any city's newspaper in the next few days and read speculation about whether such-and-such local politician plans to run for President in 2008. Seriously, crack open the Albuquerque Journal next week and see if there are any articles touting Mayor Chavez as a viable candidate for President because of his success at graffiti removal. So it's important to take coverage of local politicians with a grain of salt. But The Boston Globe sure seems to be taking Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney seriously. Excuse me for being a little skeptical. To wit:
1. Romney would be the first U.S. president named after a piece of catcher's equipment. You can't ignore a trend like that.
2. He'd be the first Mormon president. I think many Americans probably fear Mormons, and based on my brief visit to the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, those fears are probably well-founded. Although from a comedy perspective, I'd like to see him win the nomination just so I can make bad puns about polygamy for no apparent reason.
3. He's from Massachusetts. Didn't the Republicans just spend the last year claiming that someone from that state would be out of touch with mainstream America? Seriously, how funny would it be if Romney was debating John Edwards on taxes and Edwards co-opted Bush's line, "I don't know how you do things up there in (sarcastically) 'Mass-a-chu-setts'...."
4. He's an inexperienced governor whose previous experience was in the field of sports, and Americans would never hand over the keys to someone like that. Right? What? Twice? Good God!

i've heard good things about the polygamy chicken.
I think the point we're missing here is that Mitt Romney is a conservative, Mormon, pro-life republican who got elected in Massachusetts. Being from Massachusetts, I can tell you just how amazingly amazing such a thing is. The reason he's considered a contender in 08 is, if he can get elected in Massachusetts, where almost no one agrees with him, how could he not get elected in America, where a solid 51% do agree?
I not from Mass. but have seen Mitt Romney in action many times on television and elsewhere. He is conservative in most respects, but a few he is not - like he's not fully pro-life, etc. So he is moderate in several respects. He is EXTREMELY intelligent(Harvard law and MBA), is very good looking, excellent speaker (watch his Senate testimonies), and has a congenial personality. I think he'd make an excellent president or vice president. However, the Mormon thing may put people off a bit, but the man makes good decisions. I think Bill Owens (R) governor of Colorado would make an excellent VP, and an excellent President.
My ranking for top republican presidential candidates in this order:
1) Bill Owens
2) Bill Frist
3) Mitt Romney
4) Rudy Guilianni
5) Haley Barbour
6) Rick Santorum
7) Tim Pawlenty
7) John McCain
I think Gov. Pataki would be a big mistake to nominate, did you watch his speech at the RNC? It sucked and seemed condescending. Maybe Dick Cheney as VP again in 2008? I think it'd be great if he's up for the job.
Wasn't Nixon a Mormon?
no nixon was not, but there are many mormons that have served high-level positions in Republican administrations
Nixon claimed ot be a Quaker.
